Wimbledon Embraces Video Challenge System This Season.

Wimbledon tennis court with replay technology

Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in utilizing video review technology.

Replay systems will make its debut at The Championships this year.

Athletes are granted the ability to challenge particular calls from the official, following the system already in place at both the US Open and the Aussie major.

The new system is slated for use on Centre Court and the number one court for the duration of the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles matches.

This move arrives only a year after the All England Club introduced electronic line calling, which effectively ended the 147-year role of line officials.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors cannot to challenge the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the official to re-examine other situations, including:

  • Whether a ball has double-bounced.
  • If a ball touched an opponent's racquet or person during play.
  • Potential interference end of a point.

Importantly, there is an unlimited number on the number of challenges a player can ask for.

Case in Point

A recent case took place in Indian Wells recently, where a top player used the video challenge against his opponent.

Draper conceded it was a tough call for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "played the rules quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and ruled Draper was guilty of interference, awarding the point to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

This technology aren't new for Grand Slams. It was adopted at the US Open for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have video reviews implemented at every one of its events.

Other Changes

A further innovation at The Championships 2025 involves the introduction of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.

This addresses instances where fans have sometimes been uncertain if a shot was in or out.

Finally, with exactly a century of days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have further revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
